A promise, below

Pastor David Vogel · A personal vow

I WILL NOT SETTLE.

My number-one wife deserves her number-one husband.

I am not looking for a silver-medal marriage. I want a love I can choose with my whole heart. No woman should have to wonder whether she is number two in her own husband’s heart.I want my number-one wife—and I intend to be her number-one husband. That means giving her my faithfulness, my tenderness, my laughter, and my very best.

Jacob worked seven years for Rachel; his love made those years seem like only a few days.I understand that kind of devotion. The calendar does not get to tell my heart when to quit. Before Rebekah entered Isaac’s story, Abraham’s servant prayed for guidance beside a well.I am praying, too. I want the wisdom to recognize love and the humility to hear God’s answer.

Boaz met Ruth with kindness, protected her dignity, and acted with honor. That is the kind of man I intend to be, before the wedding and every day after it.I will not confuse loneliness with a calling or pressure a woman into a promise. Her yes must be as joyful, as free, and as wholehearted as mine.

While I wait, I am building, preaching, learning, and becoming a better man to come home to.There is still a great deal of life in this shark—and a great deal of love left to give.Lord, prepare my heart to cherish the woman who freely chooses to build that life with me.I WILL NOT SETTLE. And the woman who marries me should never have to settle for half my heart.
